Pro ukládání dat do souborů používá QCad textový formát standardu DXF. Vývoj QCadu 2 začal v květnu 2002 se záměrem udělat QCad produktivnější a příjemnější pro uživatele. Vývoj QCadu začal v říjnu 1999 a rozšiřoval kód. Předkompilované balíčky jsou dostupné v mnoha linuxových distribucích. Qcad community edition je uvolněna pod licencí GPL. Je dostupný pod operačními systémy Linux, Mac OS X, Unix a Microsoft Windows. Mit der Zeit verfügte CAM Expert jedoch über viele eigene CAD-Funktionen. Als er mit der Entwicklung begann, war QCad ein Teil seines CAM-Systems namens CAM Expert. Der Hauptentwickler von QCad ist Andrew Mustun.
QCad wird derzeit als das umfangreichste freie CAD-Programm angesehen. Die Professional-Edition bietet zusätzliche Funktionen sowie Unterstützung für das DWG Format. Es wird sowohl in einer proprietären, lizenzkostenpflichtigen Professional-Edition, als auch in einer sogenannten Community-Edition im Quelltext als freie Software unter der GPL vertrieben.
